The hospitality industry is often seen as a vibrant and welcoming space, but for so many of us, it can also be a place of vulnerability and hardship. The Safe Shift Foundation is dedicated to changing this narrative by empowering survivors of abuse. We are a Belfast-based organisation but these issues are industry-wide. We see you and want to help.

Understanding the Challenges in Hospitality
The hospitality industry is unique in its demands and dynamics. Workers often face long hours, high-pressure environments, and, unfortunately, instances of harassment and abuse. According to a British report in 2018, 9 out of 10 people working in the hospitality had experienced a form of sexual abuse in the workplace. This terrifying statistic highlights the urgent need for support systems tailored to the needs of these individuals.
The Impact of Abuse on Workers
Survivors of abuse in the hospitality sector often grapple with:
Emotional Trauma: The psychological effects of abuse can linger long after the incident, impacting a survivor's mental health and job performance.
Job Insecurity: Many survivors fear retaliation or job loss if they report incidents, leading to a culture of silence.
Limited Resources: Access to support services, such as therapy or legal aid, is often limited for us who work in minimum-wage sectors.
These challenges create a cycle of vulnerability that the Safe Shift Foundation aims to break.
The Mission of the Safe Shift Foundation
Founded with the goal of creating a safer and more supportive environment for hospitality workers, the Safe Shift Foundation focuses on three core areas:
Awareness and Education: The foundation works to raise awareness about the prevalence of abuse in the hospitality sector and provides training for both employees and employers on recognising and addressing these issues.
Advocacy: By advocating for policy changes at both local and national levels, the Safe Shift Foundation aims to create systemic change that protects workers and holds employers accountable.
The foundation aims to host gatherings that cover topics such as:
Recognising Abuse: Training employees to identify signs of abuse and harassment.
Bystander Intervention: Empowering coworkers to intervene safely when they witness inappropriate behavior.
Self-Advocacy: Teaching survivors how to advocate for themselves in the workplace.
These workshops will not only educate but also foster a culture of support and accountability within the industry.
Building a Community of Support
The Safe Shift Foundation stresses the importance of community in the healing process. By creating safe spaces for survivors to share their experiences, the foundation fosters a sense of belonging and solidarity. This community support is crucial for recovery and empowerment.
The Role of Employers
While the Safe Shift Foundation focuses on supporting survivors, we are very aware of the critical role employers play in creating a safe work environment. Here are some steps employers can take:
Implement and Execute Clear Policies: Establish and communicate clear policies regarding harassment and abuse, ensuring that all employees understand their rights and the reporting process. It should be made clear that employees who violate these policies will face suspension or termination as they would for any other form of misconduct e.g. Being under the influence of a mind-altering substance at work or stealing from the company.
Provide Training: Regular training sessions for staff on recognising and addressing harassment can help create a culture of accountability.
Encourage Open Dialogue: Foster an environment where employees feel safe discussing their concerns without fear of retaliation.
By taking these steps, employers can contribute to a safer and more supportive workplace for all employees.
The Future of the Safe Shift Foundation
As the Safe Shift Foundation develops, our goal remains clear: to empower survivors and create lasting change in the hospitality industry. The foundation is actively seeking partnerships with businesses, community organisations, and individuals who share its mission.
How You Can Help
